'Love Letters to the Ghosts in My Blood'

Presented by S.P.Q.R. Art Space and Studio Gallery at S.P.Q.R.

For this exhibition, ‘Love Letters to the Ghosts in My Blood,’ opening June 1, Brett Andrus set out to make paintings that make him happy, and that challenge him as a painter. This body of work focuses on two disparate themes: cityscapes, and narrative figure painting. Brett set out to paint his city — the city he grew up in, Colorado Springs — with love, including areas of downtown that hold historic and personal significance, and the potential of connection for the rest of his community. The narrative figurative work draws inspiration from Greek mythology and the Tarot. Brett has been drawn to this symbolism for years, but has recently found a more personal connection to these stories. As in previous work, he wants to create paintings that connect with the viewer on an emotional level. He wants the viewer to feel.

Let’s start with the heavy stuff. In February, Brett Andrus was diagnosed with leukemia, stage one chronic lymphocyte leukemia (CLL). Currently the prognosis is good. Patients with this condition can sometimes go five to ten years without treatment, some can go a couple of months. Right now, he is in the monitoring phase. Receiving this diagnosis, needless to say, has been profound. When one is told that they have a potentially life threatening condition, life falls quickly into perspective.

This might be weird to say, but processing this new life wrinkle over the last couple of months has actually been very freeing for Brett. Life has opened up, and for the first timehe really get to glimpse at what is important. This is a diagnosis of Life itself, in all its uncertainties. The concept of choosing his life has started to solidify. Brett am creating a life of bravery, connection, being present, creating impact, and creating with integrity. As he goes through this new phase, he feels truly lucky to have the support of family, friends, community and his love, Kate, by his side.

Brett appreciates your support, companionship, and friendship as he moves through his diagnosis and any subsequent treatment with power.
