Rankin Scott Kelly was born July 6, 1826 in Maine. Raised by his father and sister. He ran away from home at 14 traveling west on a wagon train arriving in Colorado City in 1860. John Anderson tells the story of his life helping settle El Paso County. After stepping down as sheriff he sold his land to General Palmer and rode off into the sunset.
