Please join The Machine Shop for an evening of abstract art and jazz.
The Machine Shop is proud to present the opening of “Improvisation,” featuring new paintings in a Jazz Groove by Carol Dickerson and live music by the FluteDaddy Trio led by flutist Joseph Liberti with guitarist Alan Joseph and bassist Pat Abbot.
Jazz musicians improvise on a theme within the constraints of key, tempo, and form to create new music. Carol begins each painting with a few constraints, such as color palette and the size and texture of the surface, and lays down some lines, shapes, or washes of color.
Each paint layer is a response to the color, line, rhythm and shapes of the previous layer. Harmony and dissonance, quiet passages and active passages, repetition and variety, cool versus hot—these elements of jazz and paintings come together in the final composition.
The challenge is to hold all these elements in one’s body and mind, while keeping it fresh and alive.
