Westword music’s “Best Country Band,” Ryan Chrys & The Rough Cuts will be releasing their new album, “Shovel Full of Coal” on Friday, June 2!
From their scruffy, bearded appearance, you might assume Ryan Chrys & The Rough Cuts are actual outlaws.
In another time maybe, but in today’s world, they’re blazing a trail for fans of country legends like Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and Johnny Cash by pioneering their own music genre; “Modern Outlaw Country.”
They dedicate their music to the spirit of these influences by infusing old school country and rock ‘n roll into new energy for music fans who love the heroes of the old.
Much like Nashville rejected artists like Merle Haggard and David Allan Coe, the Denver band has rebelled against fitting neatly into today’s country music standard.
“Our music is a modern take on a style we deeply respect and admire,” says Chrys. “We know the music and spirit of outlaw country legends runs deep, and they don’t like it when newer bands like us attempt to identify on their legacy, so we’re making that distinction. We’re not new or old country, Americana, Honky Tonk or Southern Rock. We are Modern Outlaw Country.”
The band will be on the road all summer supporting their new album and have performed with artists including Blackberry Smoke, The Marshall Tucker Band, Junior Brown, Shakey Graves, and more.
