Marian Busey, who helped found Arati Artists Gallery 38 years ago, will be 103 years old on March 24, 2015. Marian, as an only child growing up on a farm, liked to keep her hands busy and started drawing at an early age. In the 1930's and 1940's, she studied at the Cleveland School of Art and Ohio State University where she earned a B.S. and M.A. and went on to teach art. As her eyesight deteriorated over the years, Marian gave up watercolor painting and switched to hand pulled prints because they required less detail. Many of her scenes are from trips taken with her late husband, Jim. With the help of a friend in 2011, Marian even created two videos for Youtube explaining her gelatin plates that she makes for her hand pulled prints. Marian's Youtube videos: Gelatin Platemaking Part 1 and Gelatin Platemaking Part 2 Marian still travels to Florida to visit her son, Phillip, and can be found working at Arati Gallery on Saturdays. She enjoys visiting with patrons and discussing her creative process. One of Marian's source of artistic pride is as a co-founder of Arati Artists Gallery in 1977. As one of the founding members of Arati Gallery, she sometimes reminisces that the early years were often slow for art sales and they would sometimes supplement the income with bake sales. Last year for her 102nd birthday, Marian was interviewed by Carrie Saldo on Arts District, a show produced by Rocky Mountain PBS.
