Each “mashup” aims at a broad public audience with references from pop culture to illustrations the evening’s theme. Sure to be a hit with science geeks and cause plenty of discussion among organic shoppers, the theme for the next event on Thursday, October 16th is “Attack of the GMOs”.
The topic of genetically engineered crops is hotly controversial, so much so that it has found it’s way onto this November’s ballot. Proposition 105 “Colorado Mandatory Labeling of GMOs Initiative” would require the labeling of GE foodstuffs in Colorado. But what is the science behind the controversy? Do GMO foods actually pose a risk?
This event will invite the public to participate in a blind taste test of traditional, organic, and modified foods. Then a panel of biologists take the stage to dispel myths and rumors surrounding genetic technology. The goal is to promote scientific literacy and critical thinking with these accessible examples, and to create a fun social atmosphere to mingle with other science enthusiasts.
Bring your thinking caps and your drinking pants.
