When the villain, Dirty Dan, steals the mortgage money and forecloses on the Blueberry Ranch to build his new gambling casino, Ben and Martha find themselves “condemned to a life of poverty.” Their lovely orphaned niece — and our heroine, Lilac Valentine — agrees to stay on with them at the ranch and work for Dirty Dan. All turns out well when Dirty Dan is undone in the closing moments by our hero, Stainless Steel. This is an easy-to-produce, two act musical melodrama with five simple songs. The Chips Are Down is a constant community theater hit!
