What Makes It Baroque? Elements of the Baroque Style 1600-1750. Lecture followed by a short recital.
This lecture-recital will examine and elaborate on specific musical elements that define the Baroque Period. Opera, oratorio, concerto, sonata, and other musical constructs will be briefly discussed, as well as the historical, social, and artistic contexts in which composers such as Monteverdi, Handel, and J.S. Bach lived and created their immortal masterpieces.
The second half of the class will be an organ and harpsichord recital which will bring to life some of the best keyboard music from the high to late Baroque period.
