art&FACTS of Business in Colorado Springs (exhibit Opens)
The Art & Facts of Business exhibit at the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum will explore the rich business history of Colorado Springs through artifacts, art, and design. The exhibit will examine connections between graphic design, streetscape views, store-front signs, and commercial artifacts with concepts of identity and community. Both decorative and utilitarian, business signs and streetscapes speak a visual and textual language that connect people to place. While storefront signs express highly individual brands designed to stand out from their competition, viewed together they compose a memorable picture story that contributes to our collective identity.
The Art & Facts of Business will examine identity by using artifacts from instantly recognizable businesses such as Hibbards, Lorigs and Coutures. Both historic photographs from the Museum’s Collection and the stunning work of local photographer Kate Doerksen’s Behind the Counter project will create opportunities to compare the past with the present. The exhibit will ask questions about how visual culture influences identity in the present. How will it be shaped in the future? What authentically local brands and businesses work today to shape our identity and memory?
