This talk explores the strategic challenges facing the United States in the Middle East today and discusses the benefits of a return to a more ‘hands-off’ approach to the region.

For the last quarter century, from the Gulf War to 9/11, the Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the complexity of the Arab Spring, and today’s fight against ISIS, the Middle East has dominated American foreign policy.

Yet this period has proved a costly lesson in the folly of trying to shape a region through the use of military force.
