Although long an inspiring topic for popular imagination and children’s books, the Underground Railroad was not a serious subject of scholarly publishing until relatively recently. Now there is a national museum and expanding study. The heroes of the UGRR were fascinating but often, necessarily, unsung individuals who ignored their own safety to save others. The methods used could serve as models for a resistance movement. The UGRR spread far beyond the best-known routes and people-even to Colorado, even drawing Fred Douglass and John Brown together.
