As a knight plays chess with Death in order to find answers to questions about life, death, and God, his traveling companions try to find joy and meaning amidst the horrors of a plague-ridden society.
As the tide comes in, a knight challenges Death to a game of chess. The knight and his squire have returned from war to find their home ravished by plague, poverty, and persecution, and as they continue their journey home, they’re confronted with the horrors of a collapsing civilization. As they trek into the forest, they forget that Death lingers in the shadows. COUNTER/Weight’s adaptation of Bergman’s classic 1957 film is intimate, moving, and ultimately thought-provoking.
