The Sacred, the Secret, and the Ethics of Historical Interpretation: What I Learned from the Santos of New Mexico”
Claire Farago will discuss the peripatetic life of sacred objects and a diachronic view of the American Southwest. She deals with ethical questions surrounding the historical interpretation of 18th and 19th century New Mexican religious art, a project she undertook partly to challenge the conventional idea that Renaissance or Early Modern art should be restricted chronologically to c. 1400 to 1600. Farago will incorporate discussion and invite the audience to bring their own case studies about methodologies for articulating the processes of cultural interaction in the material realm.
