Artist statement:
“I learned metal leafing techniques in 1998 when I got the chance to help gild the dome of San Francisco’s City Hall. I am attracted to the color of copper and how it illuminates the paint from underneath. For me, it stands in as a field of light and air, a bead of amber, or a cup of water catching sun, fixing the subject in a delicate lens.
I appreciate many art styles but find that my personal act of looking is what guides my own art-making. Klimt’s use of ornament was both a document of changing values and a signal of cultural excess in turn-of-the-century Europe; I see it again here and now with reflection/mirror as ornament, as avatar, as mark-making in an age of personal image engineering. An authentic portrait of life is ever more elusive…I wonder if it might happen more often on the edge of a soup pot than on a screen.”
