Purple State Purple Haze: A Political Performance
Purple State Purple Haze is a performance written from interviews about the election with people from New Orleans to Colorado Springs. Together with a live band, actors will perform their story which span from how 9/11 changed national discourse on security and immigration, discussions of race, and a few determined leaders’ attempts to revitalize the Ninth Ward through urban gardening.
Purple State Purple Haze has been in the works since January when the music, political science, and theater departments—along with the Innovation Institute—partnered with New York musical theater composer Michael Friedman. The music department selected four students to work with Friedman, who was following the primary campaign trail, interviewing people, and writing songs using verbatim transcripts of their stories.
