In 1871, William Jackson Palmer and Dr. William Bell, a doctor from England, began developing Colorado Springs and Manitou Springs. Dr. Edwin Solly, also from England, moved to Manitou Springs, hoping the air would cure his tuberculosis. After regaining his health, Solly sang the praises of the region, which became a Mecca for health seekers.
Of the more than twenty doctors in the area in 1879, three were women. They were: Julia E. Loomis, Esther B. Holmes and Harriett Leonard.
