Mapping the Miraculous Brain

Brain-mapping, or neurolocalization, attempts to relate the brain’s structure to its function. What part of our brains allows us to be creative or logical, or controls an arm or a leg? This class will provide an historical review of brain-mapping. The process was described by Egyptians as early as 1700 BCE in the Edwin Smith papyrus, named after the dealer who bought the ancient medical text in 1862. It contains the first known descriptions of the cranial sutures, the meninges, the cerebrospinal fluid and the intracranial pulsations.
