In her illustrated program, “Jailbirds for Justice,” presenter Chris Nicholl will share the story of Dr. Caroline Spencer, Natalie Gray and Berthe Arnold of Colorado Springs who led suffrage protests at the White House in Washington D.C between 1917 – 1919. While demanding the vote, the women endured violent mob attacks, arrest and imprisonment to achieve the Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, ratified on August 18, 1920.
League members will present a short introduction to the League of Women Voters before Ms. Nicholl’s program.
Chris Nicholl is a local history specialist at the Special Collections of the Pikes Peak Library District where she assists patrons with their regional and family history quests. In recent years, she has researched, written, and told the stories of Colorado Springs’s feminist icons.
