Ice Production 1880-1940: Ute Pass, Monument, Tri-Lakes

A Program about Ice! Really! This program is on Tri-Lakes and Midland ice production.  It will also provide information for ice distribution up Ute Pass and Monument Creek. The presentation covers the locations of natural ice production, the history of the sites, and the evolving techniques of producing, collecting, storing and distributing the product. It covers the period from the 1880s into the 1940s.  The commercial customers of Front Range ice ranged from New Mexico to Missouri.  In an agrarian society, ice production provided farmers a year-round income.  The introduction of natural ice in the late 1800’s allowed a broadening diversity to the American diet.  Who knew there was so much to learn about ice?
