In this lecture, Santiago Ivan Guerra, assistant professor of Southwest Studies, discusses the history of the Starr County Strike.

While many scholars and non-academics are familiar with the work of Cesar Chavez and the United Farm Workers in California, there is still insignificant recognition of the work of the Texas Farm Worker Union in South Texas.

On June 1, 1966, the Texas Farm Workers Union in Starr County began their wildcat strike, and demanded a minimum wage of $1.25 per hour. However, the Mexican-American union picketers and organizers were immediately criminalized and punished for their strike activities. The
