Curious Palate Beer Tasting Class: What’s Yeast Got to Do with It?
The basic ingredients of beer are water, a starch source (malted barley) that will converted to sugars, a yeast to produce the fermentation, and a flavoring such as hops. Yeast is responsible for fermentation in beer…it metabolizes the sugars extracted from grains, which produces alcohol and carbon dioxide and thereby turns wort into beer. In addition to fermenting the beer, yeast influences the character and flavor. Let’s see how yeast changes the brew, shall we?
