COSine Science Fiction Convention will be held for the 14th time starting at 3 p.m. on Friday, January 19 and running through 3 p.m. on Sunday, January 21. Once again the convention will be meeting at the Hotel Eleganté Conference & Event Center. COSine 2018 is proud to welcome science fiction and fantasy author Jody Lynn Nye as the Guest of Honor; Dr. Dana Carpenter as the Science Guest of Honor; Nina and Ron Else as the Fan Guests of Honor, and local celebrities Connie Willis and Courtney (Dr. Science) Willis as Special Guests.
Jody Lynn Nye has published over 50 books and more than 160 short stories. Her newest books include Rhythm of the Imperium, Wishing on a Star, Pros and Cons (the 20th novel in the Myth-Adventures series), Myth-Fits, and Moon Beam (a young adult hard science fiction novel and the first of a new series in collaboration with Dr. Travis S. Taylor).
Dr. Dana Carpenter is a faculty member of Mechanical Engineering at the University Colorado Denver. He researches the mechanical effects of medical implants, drugs, diseases, and exercise of the human skeleton. It blurs the boundary between the virtual world and the real world to better understand the human body. His recent TEDx talk explores the effects of space travel on the human body and suggests ways in which we might be able to enable the human body to travel long distances in space.
Nina and Ron Else are long-time Denver area book sellers specializing in science fiction and fantasy books and local authors. As owners of Who Else! Books, they have been regular book dealers at past COSines. The Elses’ devotion to community and authors make them a favorite because of their commitment to support local authors.
Connie Willis has won eleven Hugo Awards, eight Nebula Awards, and eleven Locus awards. Her most recent Hugo was in 2011 for Blackout / All Clear, a novel published in two volumes. Other award winning books include The Doomsday Book and To Say Nothing of the Dog. Connie was inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame in 2009, and was named as the 28th SFWA Grand Master by the Science Fiction Writers of America.
Courtney Willis was a high school science teacher for 23 years. He was a physics professor at the University of Northern Colorado, a position from which he has now retired. Courtney enjoys collecting slide rules and fiddling with old stereo equipment. He has done science demos at three Worldcons and he presents annually at MileHiCon in Denver, as well as COSine. He has participated on science panels at various conventions, where his creative demonstrations are always well received.
In addition, there will be many other authors, scientists, and science fiction fans participating in panel discussions, lectures, demonstration, workshops, and informal activities, as well as artists showing SF and Fantasy Art and discussing their techniques.
COSine Science Fiction Convention is sponsored by First Friday Fandom, Inc., a Colorado non-profit corporation.
