Bernstein Harvard Lecture II: 'Musical Syntax'
In a series of lectures filmed at Harvard University in 1973, legendary composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein examines music from every age and place in the search for a worldwide, innate musical grammar, using analogies between music and linguistics.
Bernstein explores the structure of language and music – the syntax – and what processes transform mere words into sentences, and motives into melodies. Using this understanding, he illuminates the processes that composers use to transform small musical seeds into entire symphonies.
These screenings are free and open to the public.
