This class will explore African divine belief systems as revealed in myths or symbolized in material objects such as masks, textiles, architecture, and sacred objects. Class content ranges from the royal arts and mysteries of divine kingship to the emotional expressiveness of popular beliefs in Vodun deities represented by figural and non-figural artworks. The class culminates with contemporary memory cloths created in South Africa to tell the human stories of injustice and reconciliation.
