Does Tamarix “steal” water from native plant species? Tamarix ramosissima (tamarisk or salt cedar) is an invasive species of the Southwestern United States. During the past century, Tamarix has caused massive morphological changes to riparian ecosystems and their bank structures. This invasive wetland species flourishes on the banks of rivers in arid environments by out-competing native species for soil moisture.
